Greek word of the day- ἐγκάθετος enkáthetos, eng-kath'-et-os; from G1722 and a derivative of G2524; subinduced, i.e. surreptitiously suborned as a lier-in-wait:—spy.
So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the power and the authority of the governor.

Two unequal kingdoms are at war- both spiritual in nature- see my teaching video for the discussion on the two kingdoms that are at war.
How do we get to the Kingdom of Heaven? It's by unity of "GRACE, FAITH AND WORKS (see vv. 8-10). See also v. 10- works cannot earn us this great treasure, because it's a pure gift- but it's also clear all who receive this free gift do good. We are not saved by good works, "BUT WE ARE CREATED BEFOREHAND FOR GOOD WORKS THROUGH CHRIST JESUS." (See v. 10).
Matthew 10:16-23- "Persecution and Martyrdom"
In v. 16- Here Jesus is not only instructing His own disciples but His future ones as well. Jesus is telling us all to be "WISE AS SERPENTS" meaning having a sharp mind that His disciples and His future ones can take all advantages in the spread of the gospel, and that none of us should be wounded unnecessarily by mockers and rejectors of God's Words. "HARMLESS AS DOVES" never render evil for evil or even retaliate against those who do wrong towards the spreading of the gospel, instead wanted His disciples and future ones to remain blameless in the witnessing of the gospel.
"Persecutions should never be a reason for any disciple of Christ to quit, but instead move forward in our mission being wise and harmless in our mission of spreading the gospel."
