"Israel is defiled" vv. 1-5
These first 5 verses were pointing to this law in Deuteronomy, it seems the prophet was referring to this.
Deuteronomy 24:1-4: "When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some [a]uncleanness in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house, 2 when she has departed from his house, and goes and becomes another man’s wife, 3 ifthe latter husband detests her and writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies who took her as his wife, 4 then her former husband who divorced her must not take her back to be his wife after she has been defiled; for that is [b]an abomination before the Lord, and you shall not bring sin on the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance."
According to St. John Chrysostom- these laws regarding divorce were given to protect the wife from being murdered by the husband, for hate leads to murder; and hard hearted husbands in Israel would kill the wives they hated. Another reason the laws were given was to prevent wide-swapping, which would have destroyed the sanctity of marriage. Therefore, divorce was allowed by the Lawgiver to prevent greater evils from occurring. For hard hearted husbands would not hesitate to murder and commit other atrocities if they thought it was to their advantage-(JohnChr).
"A Call to Return" vv. 6-25
vv. 6-10: This is talking about Israel's "APOSTASY" - falling away from God- "FORNICATION" (v. 7), "ADULTREY" (v. 8), and being "FAITHLESS" (v. 10). These words are those from the Lord (v. 6). This is not only bodily sin, "but any sin you have committed" (GrgNa). Gregory of Nazianzus
vv. 15-18: We see a great messianic prophecy here In Jeremiah- (1): "Faithful Shepherds" (v. 15), the apostles- (2): "The Holy One of Israel (v. 16), Our Lord Jesus Christ- (3): "Jerusalem the Throne of the Lord (v. 17), which is looking ahead to the "eternal kingdom" (Rev 21:2- Rev 22:1)- and (4): the inclusion of "the Gentiles" (v. 17) - this speaks of the Church.
v. 19: The God of Israel is prophetically called "GOD OF THE GENTILES" who is the Father. When the disciples ask Jesus how to pray- His answer begins with "Our Father" (Luke 11:1-2).
See v. 4: "CIRCUMCSE ... YOUR HEART"- St. Cyprian tells us " the first circumcision of the flesh is made void, and the second circumcision of the spirit is promised instead" (Colossians 2:11-14-https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Colossians%202%3A11-14&version=NKJV) He further notes, "Then because that sign did not avail women, but all are sealed by the sign of the Lord" (that is, Holy Baptism).
See v. 14: "WASH THE VICES FROM YOUR HEART" - "it is not filth of the body, but the impurity of the soul, to which God is averse" (St John Chrysostom).
See v. 22: Here the Lord is specifying that all those who are responsible for Israel's "APOSTASY" are her "LEADERS". The problem here is "THEY DO NOT KNOW ME. Throughout Christian history there have been many secular and religious leaders open to the same charge. St. Paul advises here - "from such people turn away!!!" (2 Timothy 3:5).
My ending message was this- "America is walking into the same hornets nest ancient Israel was walking into during the time of the prophet Jeremiaht. We must all turn back to God, all must repent or perish."
