The Bible Day 37: “God Is A Mystery” (Psalm 18:37-42, Matthew 24:32-25:13, Job 38:1-40:2)

Introduction:

In exploring our understanding of God through selected biblical passages, we find glimpses of revelation and the recognition of divine mystery. Psalm 18:37-42 illustrates God's intervention and deliverance, showcasing aspects of His power and protection. Meanwhile, Matthew 24:32-25:13 emphasizes the unpredictability of God's timing, urging preparedness and vigilance. In contrast, Job 38:1-40:2 humbles human comprehension as God poses unanswerable questions, emphasizing the limits of our understanding. These passages collectively offer a refined view of what we know – manifestations of divine attributes – and what remains unknowable – the depth of God's ways.

Psalm 18:37-42 (NIV) recounts the psalmist's experience of God's intervention during times of trouble. In these verses, various aspects of God's character are highlighted, providing insights into what we know and don't know about God.

What we know:

1. God as a source of strength: "I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed" (Psalm 18:37). The psalmist recognizes God as the source of strength, enabling them to overcome challenges.

2. Divine support in battle: "I crushed them so that they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet" (Psalm 18:38). The passage illustrates God's active involvement in the psalmist's battles, emphasizing divine assistance in overcoming adversaries.

3. Acknowledgment of divine training: "You armed me with strength for battle; you humbled my adversaries before me" (Psalm 18:39). The psalmist attributes their strength and victory to God's training, acknowledging divine preparation for life's struggles.

What we don't know:

1. Specifics of divine intervention: While the psalmist vividly describes God's role in their triumph, the exact nature of God's intervention remains a mystery. The psalmist emphasizes trust and reliance rather than a detailed understanding of God's methods.

2. The ultimate purpose behind specific events: The psalmist celebrates victory but doesn't necessarily comprehend the overarching purpose behind each event. God's plans may extend beyond immediate circumstances, transcending human understanding.

Spiritual teachings and understanding:

1. Trust and reliance on God: Psalm 18:37-42 teaches the importance of trusting in God during challenges. The psalmist's reliance on God's strength sets an example for believers to turn to God in times of adversity.

2. Acknowledgment of divine sovereignty: The passage underscores God's supremacy in battles and challenges, encouraging believers to acknowledge and submit to God's sovereign authority over their lives.

3. Gratitude for God's provision: The psalmist expresses gratitude for God's empowering and guiding presence. This encourages believers to be thankful for God's involvement in their lives.

In summary, Psalm 18:37-42 reveals what we know about God's strength, support, and training while highlighting the mystery surrounding the specifics of divine intervention and the ultimate purpose behind events. The passage offers spiritual teachings on trust, acknowledgment of divine sovereignty, and gratitude for God's provision.

Matthew 24:32-25:13 (NIV) presents teachings and parables by Jesus regarding the coming of the Son of Man and the importance of readiness. This passage offers insights into what we know and don't know about God.

What we know:

1. Importance of recognizing signs: In Matthew 24:32-33, Jesus likens the signs of the times to the budding of a fig tree, emphasizing the significance of recognizing indicators of His coming.

2. Uncertainty of the exact hour: "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father" (Matthew 24:36). Jesus explicitly states that the precise timing of His return is unknown, even to Him during His earthly ministry.

3. Parable of the faithful and wicked servant: The parable in Matthew 24:45-51 illustrates the responsibility of believers to remain faithful and vigilant, as well as the consequences of unfaithfulness.

What we don't know:

1. Exact timing of the Second Coming: Despite the signs provided, the exact timing of Jesus' return remains a mystery. This emphasizes the element of divine unpredictability in God's plan.

2. Individual timing of the end for each person: The parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1-13 highlights the unpredictability of the timing for each person's encounter with the Lord. Five virgins were ready, while five were not, underscoring the importance of individual preparedness.

Spiritual teachings and understanding:

Vigilance and readiness: The overall message of Matthew 24:32-25:13 encourages believers to stay vigilant, recognize the signs of the times, and be spiritually prepared for the return of Christ.

2. Unknown timing and trust in God's plan: Acknowledging that the exact timing is unknown fosters trust and reliance on God's sovereign plan. Believers are called to remain faithful and prepared, irrespective of when the events will unfold.

3. Individual responsibility: The parables stress personal responsibility in readiness for Christ's return. Each person is accountable for their spiritual preparedness, emphasizing the importance of a personal relationship with God.

In summary, Matthew 24:32-25:13 imparts teachings on recognizing signs, the uncertainty of the exact hour, and individual responsibility for readiness. The passage emphasizes the unknown aspects of God's timing while promoting spiritual preparedness and trust in God's sovereign plan.

Job 38:1-40:2 (NIV) captures a significant portion of God's response to Job, revealing profound insights into God's nature and the limitations of human understanding.

What we know:

1. God's sovereignty over creation: In Job 38, God asserts His authority and creative power over the universe. He asks Job rhetorical questions highlighting the divine role in forming and sustaining the world.

2. Limitations of human wisdom: God challenges Job's understanding, emphasizing the vast difference between divine wisdom and human comprehension. This is evident in questions like, "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation?" (Job 38:4).

3. Behemoth and Leviathan: In Job 40:15-41:34, God describes two powerful creatures, Behemoth and Leviathan, showcasing His dominion over even the mightiest beings in creation.

What we don't know:

1. God's reasons for Job's suffering: Throughout this dialogue, God doesn't explicitly reveal why Job experienced intense suffering. The divine purpose behind Job's trials remains a mystery, emphasizing the inscrutability of God's plan.

2. Full understanding of God's ways: While God provides glimpses of His wisdom and creative power, the full extent of God's ways remains beyond human comprehension. The questions posed to Job underscore the limitations of human understanding.

Spiritual teachings and understanding:

1. Humility before God: Job 38:1-40:2 teaches humility as God reveals the vast difference between divine wisdom and human knowledge. It encourages believers to approach God with reverence, acknowledging His supremacy.

2. Trust in God's wisdom: The passage emphasizes trust in God's wisdom even when facing life's uncertainties. Job's experience underscores the importance of faith and submission to God's sovereign plan, trusting that His ways surpass human understanding.

3. Recognition of God's creative power: God's vivid descriptions of creation highlight His role as the ultimate Creator. This encourages believers to appreciate the intricacies of the natural world and recognize God's sovereignty over all aspects of existence.

In summary, Job 38:1-40:2 provides spiritual teachings on humility before God, trust in His wisdom, and recognition of His creative power. The passage emphasizes the limitations of human understanding and the importance of acknowledging God's sovereignty, even in the face of unanswered questions.
