ROMANS 7 STUDY GUIDE & BREAKDOWN
BAPTISM: FREEDOM FROM LAW, UNION WITH CHRIST
ROMANS 7:1-6
7:1-4: PAUL HAS AFFIRMED that justification, our ongoing communion with God, comes by faith in Christ, and not by following the WORKS OF THE LAW: These verse use examples from the law to prove our ultimate need to be FREE FROM THE LAW: under the law of Moses, only death releases a person from marriage- (v. 2), While divorce does not- (v. 3): Likewise, Christ's death brings about our death to the law so that we can be MARRIED TO ANOTHER, THAT IS, TO CHRIST- (v. 4):
7:5-6: FLESH here in this passage is referring to an unredeemed person under the power of sin and death: In this condition, SINFUL PASSIONS are awakened when man faces the demands of the law- (see vv. 7-10): AROUSED BY is more properly translated- "aroused through"... The law merely brings to light our bondage to sin; it does not cause us to sin...Christian believers, on the other hand, live a new mode of existence by the power of the Holy Spirit: As we have been liberated from the ways of the flesh, in our marriage to Christ- (v. 4) we bear fruit to God: LETTER- (v. 6)- refers to the Mosaic Law!!!
SIN USES WHAT IS HOLY TO PRODUCE DEATH
ROMANS 7:7-12
7:7-12: THE LAW was intended to reveal the depth of humanity's sin so that we would turn to Christ in repentance and faith: The law also had the effect of increasing rebellion and sin in many people: This is not because the law itself is bad, but because unredeemed humanity craves to do what is forbidden:
THE FLESH USES WHAT IS GOOD TO PRODUCE SIN
ROMANS 7:13-25
7:13-17: THE PASSIONS DRIVING US TO SIN get even stronger when we fight against them on our own, and the clarity of right and wrong found in THE LAW increases the passions all the more: only Christ's healing power can save us in this ongoing battle...
7:17: MAN is not sinful by nature: The Orthodox Church rejects any teaching that man has a sin nature or that man's nature is depraved to the core: This passage clearly shows that SIN is something distinct from our nature: Because we are created in the image of God- (Genesis 1:26), there is an indelible goodness in our nature that can be never be undone: while we can become immersed in sin, we know that it is still not part of our nature, but a foreign force THAT DWELLS IN US...So sin is what we do, not what we are...(see also v. 20):
7:18-23: PAUL CLARIFIES the distinction between the will of the soul and the will of the FLESH...because the soul is reborn in baptism, it can strive to follow THE LAW OF GOD- (v. 22): yet our flesh remains corrupt in this word, and it often fights against our will to do good...
7:20: SEE- my notes for (v. 17)"
7:24: THIS QUESTION is answered in (Romans 8:1-4): THE TERM BODY OF DEATH refers to our corrupted state in this world, it does not imply that the body is evil, for the body is good: In this world, however, it remains in need of final redemption!!!
7:25: REPENTANT SINNERS will have NO CONDEMNATION if they remain IN CHRIST through faith and baptism and if they WALK in the power of THE SPIRIT...
PSALM 10 (11)- DEPENDING ON YOUR BIBLE VERSION-STUDY & BREAKDOWN...
PSALM 10 (11)
PSALM 10 (11)- In the Lord I put my trust; How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your mountain”? 2 For look! The wicked bend their bow, They make ready their arrow on the string, That they may shoot [a]secretly at the upright in heart. 3 If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do?
4 The Lord is in His holy temple, The Lord’s throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men. 5 The Lord tests the righteous, But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates. 6 Upon the wicked He will rain coals; Fire and brimstone and a burning wind Shall be [b]the portion of their cup.
7 For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; [c]His countenance beholds the upright.
PSALM 10 (11): Shows what it means for the Church to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ-(v. 1), for He is THE END: (1): TRUSTING IN THE LORD overcomes cowardice- (Flee to the mountains like a sparrow, v. 1): (2): TRUSTING IN THE LORD overcomes the devil and his angels- (vv. 2, 3; see also Ephesians 6:16): (3): TRUSTING IN THE LORD makes the Church a dwelling place of God- (v. 4 (a); see also 1 Corinthians 3:16-17; Ephesians 2:21-22): (4): TRUSTING IN THE LORD keeps one poor in spirit- (v. 4(b); see also Matthew 5:3): (5): TRUSTING IN THE LORD helps one love virtue and hate vice-(vv. 5-7; see also Hebrews 1:9; 1 Peter 3:10-12):
Sin is something we do by choice it's not by nature, and if we look at Genesis 3 THE FALL OF MANKIND it paints the perfect picture...Eve was tempted by the Serpent (Lucifer-AKA Satan), she was weak and because of he weakness she chose to eat the fruit, and that's how sin enter the world all by free will...Even then more likely in her own shame and guilt tempted and deceived Adam, and So Adam failed leading mankind to the curse of sin and corruption...Christ came to pave the way for salvation and succeeded where Adam and Eve both failed...In Christ there is light meaning there is indeed life, and yes it's definitely a spring of living water in your heart...Lastly Christ is our salvation and our redeemer, but it also takes some work on our end- We must establish a true relationship in both spirit and in truth to be truly transformed into the ways of Christ...
"WE MUST LIVE A LIFE OF REPENTANCE JUST LIKE JESUS TAUGHT AND PREACHED, ALL FALL SHORT OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD, SO ALL MUST REPENT OR PERISH!!! OUR FAITH IS MORE THAN JUST A ONE TIME DECLARATION, INSTEAD ITS A LIFETIME OF SERVICE TO THE LORD AND A TRUE REALTIONSHIP BUILT ON REAL RESULTS!!!"
-JARED W. CAMPBELL
