The Book of Jeremiah- "Introduction"
Author: Jeremiah- "THE ONE WHOM GOD APPOINTS OR EXALTS"
Date: The Prophet Jeremiah prophesied from 627 to 582 BC...
Major Themes: DESTRUCTION AND CAPTIVITY. The prophet Jeremiah prophesied both the persecutions and the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, and also foretelling the captivity of the Jews in Babylon. He preached that the people should repent, and promising hope for all those who would remain faithful in the Lord. He also prophesied a "NEW COVENANT" (Jeremiah 38:31-34) and it would be inscribed in the hearts of all believers, inaugurated and fulfilled in Christ, who was the Messiah of Israel.
Background: The prophet Jeremiah also referred to as the "WEEPING PROPHET." The prophet shed many tears during those dark and despairing times of the Babylonian captivity. The prophet started prophesying during King's Josiah's reign (640-609 BC). He was also know as "THE PROPHET OF THE INTERIOR LIFE"- that's because of his preaching of personal knowledge of God and also the forgiveness of sins - (Jeremiah 38:31-34). His time as a prophet created such a heavy burden on him that it broke even his own heart -( Jeremiah 8:19-21).
Jeremiah Chapter 1- "THE PROPHET IS CHOSEN" vv. 1-19
1:1: THE NAME JEREMIAH: which was mentioned in the opening means "GOD APPOINTS OR EXALTS..." ANATHOTH is the prophet's hometown- which was within the "LAND OF BENJAMIN"
1:2-3: The prophet Jeremiah prophesied during the reigns of - "JOSIAH", "JEHOIAKIM"- and "ZEDEKIAH."
1:5: "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born, I sanctified you. I established you a prophet to the nations." God's foreknowledge or predestined- was the calling of Jeremiah the prophet are woven thogether. "Many are called but a few are chosen" (Matthew 22:14).
1:6: Jeremiah like Moses before him (Exodus 4:10)- Moses had a speech impairment and was not good at speaking- like Moses Jeremiah claims he does not "KNOW HOW TO SPEAK." As with all the prophets, God put His words in Jeremiah's mouth (v. 9). "Who spoke through the prophets" ("THE NICENE CREED").
1:16: We see three sins that are "NOTED" here in scripture, the sins of Judah, and is also for all of mankind that leads to judgment and destruction- 1: "FORSAKING GOD"- 2: "FALSE WORSHIP"- 3: "PREOCCUPATION WITH THEMSELVES" - I see similarities happening today around the entire world, judgement is also upon us.
