“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
Acts 21:17-32 - Paul in Jerusalem, the Temple Riot
St. Paul is meeting with James the bishop of Jerusalem, and James is reporting that many Jews have set themselves against St. Paul. The Jews were upset with St. Paul's teachings, but neither Jew nor Gentiles could find salvation through the Law. James here is encouraging St. Paul to demonstrate his compliance with the Law in orde to gain the trust of the Jewish Christians in Jerusalem, lead by example is the best way to gaining trust. It was in v. 28- thst led to St. Paul being beaten, because any Gentiles that entered into the prohibited areas of the precincts of the temple was considered a serious offense punishable by death. See v. 26- talked about PURIFICATION.
John 16:1-13: "The work of the Holy Spirit"
v. 6: "SORROW" has filled your hearts"- sorrow here means "extreme grief leading to despondency or despair"- which is a sinful passion. "Great is the tyranny of despondency" (St. John Chrysostom). We combat "Despondency" by taking comfort in the Holy Spirit.
It's through "ILLUMINATION" brough by the Holy Spirit- the world will be convicted - meaning proven wrong: the world will be convicted by "SIN"- "RIGHTEOUSNESS" -"JUDGEMENT": all who reject Christ Will receive the same punishment as Satan: Matthew 25:41: "“Then He will also say to those on the left hand,‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:
The HOLY SPIRIT is the SPIRIT OF TRUTH, and because the Spirit abides in the Church and all those who follow Christ, are to be the Guardians of the truth.
"Purification"- see (Numbers 19:9)- the OT rite where one was cleansed of ritual impurity caused by such things as contact with leprosy, a dead body or sexual acts- this act was done either by a sacrifice or sprinkling with water of "purification." Christ liberated the faithful from these rites. Christians are purified by the sacraments and by their spiritual struggles by transforming they'd passions.
"Illumination" ENLIGHTENMENT- Baptism is called "illumination"
"Righteousness"- be good, just and blameless. We are called to be humble and be obedient to God. Righteousness is the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
Numbers 6:24-26
“The Lord bless you and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face shine upon you,
And be gracious to you;
26 The Lord [a]lift up His countenance upon you,
And give you peace.” ’
