The US government is seriously considering sending cluster munitions to Ukraine to help counter Russian forces, a senior US official has revealed.
The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Miley, recently said that dual-use improved conventional munitions (DPICM) capable of detonating and scattering smaller munitions over a wider area may be sent.
Last February, Ukraine asked the US for CBU-100 cluster bombs, also known as Mk.20 Rockeye II, in order to dismantle them and then attach the warheads to its unmanned vehicles and drones to carry out devastating hits on Russian tanks with greater accuracy.
However, US authorities are concerned that civilians could be killed or injured if they fall on unexploded bombs. This risk, along with adverse reactions from allies, prevented the US from delivering the bombs to Kiev.
