Mark 6:1-6
6:1-3: A DOUBLE REPONSE: of being both ATONISHED (v. 2) and OFFENDED (v. 3) occurs all the time with those who encounter Christ-see (Luke 11:14-16; John 9:16): The rejection Christ received was in HIS OWN COUNTRY is giving us a glimpse into His rejection by the entire Jewish Nation at His trial before Pilate (John 19:14-15): BROTHER- see my (Matthew 12:46-50, NOTES)...
6:5-6: JESUS COULD DO NO MIGHTY WORK THERE: not because He lacked the power or the authority but is was due to all the UNBELIEF OF A FEW IN NAZARETH: While grace is offered and given to all, only those who receive it in faith obtain its benefits!!!

6:7-13: See my Matthew 10:1-15 notes
6:13: ANOINTING THE SICK WITH OIL: has not only a medical point to it but also a sacramental value meaning spiritual value!!! The Lord's healing power is shown throughout all of creation (Mark 5:27; Numbers 21:8-9; 4 Kingdoms 13:21; John 9:6-7; Acts 5:15; 19:11-12)- James 5:14, teaches us that so oil is a vehicle of God's mercy and healing in the Church-
THE BAPTIST BEHEADED- See also (Matthew 14:1-12; Luke 9:7-9)
Mark 6:14-29
6:14: THIS KING HEROD: was the son of the one who slew the infants in Bethlehem when Yeshua was born (Matthew 2:16): This Herod was technically a governor, he was called king by popular demand: John the Baptist had not been known to work miracles while John was living, this Herod believes John was raised from the dead (v. 16), thinking POWERS ARE AT WORK IN HIM: So this Herod fears John the Baptist more dead than when he was alive!!!
6:15: ELIJAH: was expected to return and work various signs laying out progress before the 2nd Coming of Christ our Lord- (Malachi 4:5): THE PROPHET: Is interpreted by some to be a reference to the Messiah, The One Moses had foretold and spoke about in (Dt 18:15), while many others interpret it as just meaning a new prophet had arisen...
6:17-29: THIS ACCOUNT: Is explaining John's earlier death so those hearing would understand why HEROD would think JOHN had risen from the dead: Flashback here (v. 30) which we haven't read yet picks up where (v. 13) left off:
6:20: HEROD: with all of his wealth and the soldiers doing his dirty work, FEARED JOHN, a man who basically lived in poverty and wore camel's hair (MARK 1:6)- seems to be sending a statement of personal holiness and integrity along with the people's perception of John, for they all held him in the highest esteem (Mark 11:32):
6:14-30: This passage is read on August 29, the Feast of the Beheading of John the Baptist

6:52: CHRIST IS A MATTER OF THE HEART: Meaning it has nothing to do with just intellect!!! The Lord changes our hearts when we are glorified with faith in God alone and nothing else!!! We become open to receiving His presence and grace- the ancient Church referred to the heart as the "seat of knowledge"!!!

MARK 7
THE TRADITIONS OF THE PHARISEES- See (Matthew 15:1-20)
Mark 7:1-23
7:1-13: OBSERVATION OF JEWISH CUSTOMS OR TRADITIONS: No issue here is not that Yeshua is prohibiting these traditions (Matthew 5:17-19; Matthew 23:23): The issue is human's setting traditions contrary to the traditions of "YAHWEH" - (v. 8): THE TRADITIONS OF THE ELDERS, (v. 3) is interpretations of the Law, which for THE PHARISEES AND THE SCRIBES, (v. 1) was as authoritative as the Law and often superseded it: So according to this tradition, the offerings called CORBAN, (v. 11) could be promised to "YAHWEH" in such a way that property or earnings could still be used for oneself, but not for anybody else, including one's parents: Secondary traditions such as this obscure the primary tradition of the Law, which is in the Commandments of "YAHWEH"!!!
7:15-23: FOOD CANNOT DEFILE A PERSON: because YAHWEH created it so is therefore considered pure to our Lord who created it: EVIL THINGS, (v. 21) are not from the Lord, and these are what truly defiles a person!!!
A GENTILE WOMAN BELIEVES- See also (Matthew 15:21-28)

7:34: HE SIGHED: This was a sign of divine compassion for the sufferings of our fallen human nature!!!
7:36: HERE, OUR LORD: is showing us we must no seek any acclaim or praise for doing good to and for others: Early saints taught that this verse is teaching us those who disobey Christ in this situation, they are being used as a good example, that we should proclaim those who have done good to us even if they do not want us to!!!
