LUKE 18

THE TENACIOUS WIDOW

LUKE 18:1-8

18:1: Persistent (v. 7) and faithful (v. 8) prayer is the remedy for the tribulation just described (Luke 17:22-37; see also 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18):

18:8: WILL HE REALLY FIND FAITH ON EARTH??? The Lord often used this form of question when speaking of Characteristics that are rarely found (see- Luke 11:11; and Luke 12:42): Could be making a reference to His Second Coming as well???

THE PHARISEE AND THE PUBLICAN

LUKE 18:9-14

18:10: THE PHARISEE: is a highly respected as well as careful observer of the details of the Law, TAX COLLECTOR is despised as a sinner who collaborates with the occupying Roman forces, betraying and cheating his own people!!!

18:10-14: This passage is read on the fourth Sunday before Great Lent, called the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee!!!

18:11-12: THE PRACTICES OF THIS PHARISEE: are worthy examples to follow: His good deeds (fasting and giving tithes) are the primary weapons against the passions of lust and greed (adultery and extortion): with a humble and repentant heart, these outward practices are worthless and lead only to pride and judgement of others: He prays WITH HIMSELF, for God is absent where there is boasting.

18:13: THE TAX COLLECTOR: shows by his posture an awareness of his soul and it's state, standing far from the altar of sacrifice with eyes cast downward: His prayer, GOD, BE MERCIFUL TO ME A SINNER, is the foundation of the Yeshua (Jesus) Prayer (see- 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18), as in refrain "Lord have mercy" which is all part of Orthodox personal prayer and worship!!!

18:14: JUSTIFIED: means forgiven and set right with God, for inward humility is blessed while pride in outward deeds is condemned!!!

RECEIVE THE KINGDOM AS A CHILD- See also (Matthew 19:13-15; Mark 10:13-16)

LUKE 18:15-17

18:15-17: INFANTS: are the standard of faith by which adults RECEIVE THE KINGDOM OF GOD, and not the other way around: A LITTLE CHILD is not arrogant, they do not despise anyone, they are innocent and guiltless: They do not inflate themselves in the presence of important people, or even withdrawal from those in sorrows: Instead they live simple lives- (Theoph): see my Matthew 19:13-15 notes:

THE RICH YOUNG MAN- See also (Matthew 19:16-26; Mark 10:17-23) & THE REWARD OF RENUNCIATION- See also (Matthew 19:27-30; Mark 10:28-31)

LUKE 18:18-30

18:18-30: See my Matthew 19:16-29-Notes: 19:16-17: THIS MAN DOES NOT COME TO TEST YESHUA (JESUS): But instead to seek advice from one he considers no more than A GOOD TEACHER: CHRIST RESPONSE: (v. 17) does not deny He is God, but designed to lead the rich man to this knowledge!!!

19:20: FORMAL OBSERVANCE OF COMMANDMENTS: Does not make us righteous before God: The man had an earnest desire for eternal life, but seemed to lack something and presses Yeshua (Jesus) for the answer he was seeking!!!

19:21: TO BE PERFECT: Meaning to be perfect in FAITH is one must be willingly to sacrifice all and deny self will, pickup the cross and follow Christ: Of course nothing is gained unless sacrifice is freely given!!!

19:23-26: VARIOUS INTERPRETATIONS: Have been suggested for the impossible image of a CAMEL going through an EYE OF A NEEDLE: Further translations show the word was not CAMEL, BUT "ROPE"; or that the eye of a needle was a city gate through which the camel might barely squeeze if it were first unloaded of all it's baggage, symbolizing wealth: Even the Talmud uses the expression "for an elephant to go through an eye of a needle..." so salvation is nearly impossible for those attached to riches, the disciples response, "who then can be saved???" answer by the Grace of God even the impossible to man can come to pass!!! meaning possible for the Lord!!!

19:28: JUDGING: SEE AND READ LUKE 22:30!!!

19:29-30: CHRIST IS NOT COMMANDING: Believers to divorce spouses and abandon children: See (1 Corinthians 7:12-16)

18:22: See my Matthew 19:21-Notes: 19:21: TO BE PERFECT: Meaning to be perfect in FAITH is one must be willingly to sacrifice all and deny self will, pickup the cross and follow Christ: Of course nothing is gained unless sacrifice is freely given!!!

18-25-27: See Luke 19:8-10 : 8 Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.”

9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.

THE THIRD PROPHECY OF THE PASSION- See also (Matthew 20:17-19; Mark 10:32-34)

LUKE 18:31-34

18:34: THE SAYING WAS HIDDEN: not by God, because the disciples could not understand it's meaning until the actual events of Passion had taken place!!!

THE BLIND MAN OF JERICHO HEALED- See also (Mark 10:46-52)

LUKE 18:35-43

18:35-43: See my Matthew 20:30- Notes: 20:29-34: THE TWO BLIND MEN: Greet Jesus as LORD, the common title for God, and Son of David, a title that is associated and rooted into the title Messiah!!! Yeshua knows what we want before we ask, he calls us to ask freely so that we might learn of His great Mercy!!! Early Church Saints and Father also give a spiritual interpretation to this miracle, with the blind men symbolizing future generations who would come to faith only by hearing and without th benefit of seeing Christ in person: see also (John 20:29): Those who tried to silence the blind men are persecutors and tyrants who, in every generation try to silence the Church!!!
