Luke 14 Study & Breakdown/ Be Lowly & Hospitable to the Lowly!!!

Luke 14

A MAN HEALED ON THE SABBATH

Luke 14:1-6

14:1-6: ON THE SABBATH: See my Luke 6:7 notes: Jesus' illustration here builds on His words in Luke 13:15: 6:7: THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES: because of certain traditions they had built up around the Law that healing was considered work, and so was not permissible ON THE SABBATH: Luke 13:15- The Lord then answered him and said, [a]“Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it?

BE LOWLY & BE HOSPITABLE TO THE LOWLY & WORDLY ENTANGLEMENTS, POOR EXCUSES- See also (Matthew 22:1-14)

Luke 14:7-24

14:7-17: THESE PARABLES: are directed towards guest (vv. 7-11) and hosts (vv. 12-14): Imitation of Christ, prefect humility is expected of guests, and boundless charity is demanded of hosts (see- James 4:6):

14:12-14: THIS INSTRUCTION: is based on the manner in which God treats us, even though not one of us could possibly REPAY HIM (See-Luke 6:30-36): YOU SHALL BE REPAID- See also (Luke 10:34-35): LUKE 10:34-35: 34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.35 On the next day,[a]when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ 10:34-35: THE BANDAGES, OIL, AND WINE: are sacramental images (1): the garment of baptism, which brings us out of the wounds of sin; (2): the oil of Chrismation, which gives us new life in the Holy Spirit; and (3) the communion of the divine Blood, which leads to eternal life: HIS OWN ANIMAL is indicating Christ bearing our sins in his own Body, and the INN reveals the Church in which Christ's CARE is received-He pays the price for that care- (1 Corinthians 6:20; and 1 Corinthians 7:23):

14:15: THIS MAN: unwittingly declares the ultimate beatitude: The truth in these words can come only through understanding the BREAD TO BE ETERNAL COMMUNION WITH GOD!!!

14:16-17: THIS PARABLE: operates on two levels: showing us both the First and the Second Coming of Christ, He is the SERVANT sent to gather many: SUPPER is indicating evening, the end of the age: The people INVITED are first the Jews, then the rest of mankind!!!

14:16-24: This passage is read on the second Sunday before Christmas, called the Sunday of the Holy Ancestors of Christ!!!

14:18-20: THE EARLY SAINTS: Teach the THREE EXCUSES as having both a literal meaning , that many people are attached to worldly cares to accept the Kingdom of God (v. 26; Luke 18:29), and spiritual meanings: St. Ambrose sees the three excuses of I CANNOT COME representing the Gentile, the Jew, and also the heretic: The Gentile's devotion to earthly wealth is represented by the PIECE OF GROUND, the Jew's enslavement to the five books of the Law by the FIVE YOKE OXEN, and the heretic's espousal of error by the man refusing on account of his WIFE: other teachings associate the excuses with people devoted to earthly matters, to things pertaining to the five senses, and to all the pleasures of the flesh!!!

14:21-23: THOSE IN THE STREETS AND LANES: indicate (1): the Gentiles who accepted Christ after the faithless Jews rejected Him, and (2) those outside the Church replacing those within who have rejected their own baptism!!!

THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP

Luke 14:25-35

14:26: THE COMMAND TO HATE: One's kindred and HIS OWN LIFE ALSO is not to be taken literally: Instead we are to hate the way our relationships with others can hinder our total dedication to the Kingdom of God, which is absolute over anything else in our lives:

14:27: SEE Luke 9:23- Notes & verse: 9:23: TWO THINGS: (1): Each of us must take up HIS OR HER CROSS: The burden in this world is different for each of us, and each of us have been chosen by God to bear certain struggles for his or her own salvation and also the salvation of those around them: (2): The cross is to be taken up DAILY: Commitment to following our Lord and Savior is not to be a one-time event: Instead it is the continual practice of faith and obedience, even to the point of being shamed and persecuted by the entire world!!!

14:28: BUILD A TOWER: SEE- also (1 Corinthians 3:10-15): According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

14:34: SALT: See Notes at Matthew 5:13-16: 13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven- Salt and Light illustrate the role of the disciples in society!!! The Lord our God is the true uncreated Light: The OT- the light is symbolic of God (Isaiah 60:1-3)!!!

-Be humble and kind but the greatest is love...There is nothing wrong with being a lowly person, a person of humility and little of importance to this secular world...Instead we should strive to be the opposite of what this fallen world wants us to be...Love conquers all we should strive to help as many as we can, but also keep in mind help who wants the help, and always listen to the Lord's voice before to committing to anything...In a world that is fallen and full of evil where what is good is now bad, and what's bad is now good, we must hold the faith, keeping doing good and being hospitable to all- The Lord is always watching and our souls are truly spiritual-eternal!!!
