JOB 21: Job: “Pronounces Judgment on the Ungodly”

Job 21 Study Sheet

Jared led a Bible study session focusing on Job's struggle with God's presence during difficult times. Jared emphasized the importance of grace and faith in achieving transition from one kingdom to another and explained that good works flow from authentic faith that is fundamental in our walk with Christ. He also highlighted the significance of maintaining faith in challenging times, citing various biblical figures. He ended the session with a prayer and expressed his hope that participants are learning from his simple approach. He also mentioned his potential plans to attend seminary school in the future.

Job 21:1-3

Then Job answered and said:

“Listen carefully to my speech,

And let this be your consolation.

Bear with me that I may speak,

And after I have spoken, keep mocking.”

“LISTEN CAREFULLY TO MY SPEECH”: Job speaks this way due to how his friends kept on treating him like he was a very wicked man. Job is letting them know that none of them were listening to him.

i. Instead, Job wanted to prove that he had been listening to them. “In this closing speech of the second cycle, Job was determined to prove that he had listened to what his counselors had said. This he did by quoting or otherwise alluding to their words and refuting them. Compare 20:11 with 21:7, 18:19 with 21:8, 18:5 with 21:17, 5:4 and 20:10 with 21:19, and 20:4with 21:29.” (Smick)

“AND AFTER I HAVE SPOKEN, KEEP MOCKING”: This is indicating the hardness between Job and his friend.

Job 21:4-16

“As for me, is my complaint against man?

And if it were, why should I not be impatient?

Look at me and be astonished;

Put your hand over your mouth.

Even when I remember I am terrified,

And trembling takes hold of my flesh.

Why do the wicked live and become old,

Yes, become mighty in power?

Their descendants are established with them in their sight,

And their offspring before their eyes.

Their houses are safe from fear,

Neither is the rod of God upon them.

Their bull breeds without failure;

Their cow calves without miscarriage.

They send forth their little ones like a flock,

And their children dance.

They sing to the tambourine and harp,

And rejoice to the sound of the flute.

They spend their days in wealth,

And in a moment go down to the grave.

Yet they say to God, ‘Depart from us,

For we do not desire the knowledge of Your ways.

Who is the Almighty, that we should serve Him?

And what profit do we have if we pray to Him?’

Indeed their prosperity is not in their hand;

The counsel of the wicked is far from me.”

see vv. 4-6:

“IS MY COMPLAINT AGAINST MAN?”: Job is demonstrating to his friends that his conflict is with God. He is also struggling a little with his friends attitudes towards him, but truth is Job’s struggle is spiritual in nature. Job wasn’t dealing with the normal everyday troubles and stressors like we do, no Job’s struggle was indeed with God and he was wondering if God was in the midst of this very dark time for Job.

quickly explain Ephesians 2:1-10- Two unequal Kingdoms are at war …

”Look at me and be astonished”: Here Job is asking his friends to look at him and be astonished by what has happen to him, Job was a good and godly man who is now struggling spiritually.

see vv. 7-14: According to the Commentary of the Orthodox Study Bible- That some, seeing the righteous suffer and the sinner prosper, assume that God’s judgment is not just. But although the ungodly May prosper on this earth, but they cannot escape judgment when they die. Christ will say to all who reject Him, “DEPART FROM ME” (see Matthew 25:41; and Luke 2:47-48).

Matthew 25:41

“Then He will also say to those on the left hand,‘Depart from Me, you cursed,into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:

Luke 2:47-48 Andthat servant whoknew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.48 But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.

See v. 16: According to the Commentary of the Orthodox Study Bible and from the commentary of St. Ambrose of Milan- “Let us pray together to undergo toil here, so that we may deserve to gain the consolation of eternal rest in the Kingdom of heaven. For prosperity and abundance constitute a powerful inducement to do wrong; they exalt a man to pride and induce him to forget his Creator” (AmbM).

see vv. 23-26: Notes- Riches should never lift up the soul, nor should poverty disturb it.

see v. 29: Notes- According to the Study Bible- “Those who do not pass through the present life as if were a “ROAD” to that which is to come are unable to comprehend those who do.

“If in his friends’ arguments there was no comfort for him, it is equally true that in his answers he brought no conviction to them. All this is strangely suggestive. Men discussing human life are almost certain to blunder when they attempt to explain it.” (Morgan)
