Exodus 13 Study Guide & Breakdown …
The Sanctification of the Firstborn (Exodus 13:1-2)
13 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Consecrate[a] to Me all the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and beast; it is Mine.”
The Feast of Unleavened Bread
3 And Moses said to the people: “Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of [b]bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out of this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten. 4 On this day you are going out, in the month Abib. 5 And it shall be, when the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, which He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall keep this service in this month. 6 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the Lord. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days. And no leavened bread shall be seen among you, nor shall leaven be seen among you in all your quarters. 8 And you shall tell your son in that day, saying, ‘This is done because of what the Lord did for me when I came up from Egypt.’ 9 It shall be as a sign to you on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the Lord’s law may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand the Lord has brought you out of Egypt. 10 You shall therefore keep this [c]ordinance in its season from year to year.
The Law of the Firstborn
11 “And it shall be, when the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, as He swore to you and your fathers, and gives it to you, 12 that you shall [d]set apart to the Lord all that open the womb, that is, every firstborn that comes from an animal which you have; the males shall be the Lord’s. 13 But every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. And all the firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. 14 So it shall be, when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ that you shall say to him, ‘By strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 15 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh was stubborn about letting us go, that the Lord killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of beast. Therefore, I sacrifice to the Lord all males that open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 16 It shall be as a sign on your hand and as frontlets between your eyes, for by strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.”
The Wilderness Way
17 Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up in orderly ranks out of the land of Egypt.
19 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had placed the children of Israel under solemn oath, saying, “God will surely [e]visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here with you.”
20 So they took their journey from Succoth and camped in Etham at the edge of the wilderness. 21 And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, to go by day and night. 22 He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.
NOTES Exodus 13 – (vv. 1-3, 10-12, 14-16 & v. 22) …
13:1 The Sanctification of the firstborn foreshadows the Incarnation of the Son of God … For He is the Firstborn of the Mother of God – (Matthew 1:24-25; Luke 2:7) … The Church of the Firstborn are His brethren, whose names are registered in heaven – (Hebrews 2:11, 17; and Hebrews 12:23) …
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Matthew 1:24-25: Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and [a]did not know her till she had brought forth her[b] firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.
Luke 2:7: And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a [a]manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
- 2:7: THE TERM FIRSTBORN: does not imply whether Mary in fact had other children, but does state that no children were born to her before Yeshua (Jesus): The first born son is traditionally the primary heir and recipient of blessings: In Orthodoxy, Christ's SWADDLING CLOTHS are seen as burial wrappings meaning His one purpose was to endure death-(Col 1:15, 18), teaches us that Christ is the firstborn over all creation, and also the firstborn from the dead: THE MANAGER, or feed trough, would have been located in a cave where the animals were kept, this fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah: "The ox knows its owner and the donkey its master's crib (Isaiah 1:3)
Colossians 1:15, 18: (v. 15): He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. (v. 18): And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
Isaiah 1:3: The ox knows its owner And the donkey its master’s [a]crib; But Israel does not know, My people do not [b]consider.”
-The use of the word of TILL does not imply that Joseph had martial relations with Mary after the Savior’s birth … In the Bible, this word – (sometimes translates “TO”) is often used to express a situation that continues after the event Mentioned (see – Exodus 28:20-22; Genesis 8:7; Deuteronomy 34:6; and 2Kingdoms 6:23) … The witness of the entire Church throughout history is that Mary remained a virgin for life …
Exodus 28:20-22: 20 and the fourth row, a [f]beryl, an [g]onyx, and a jasper. They shall be set in gold settings. 21 And the stones shall have the names of the sons of Israel, twelve according to their names, like the engravings of a signet, each one with its own name; they shall be according to the twelve tribes.
22 “You shall make chains for the breastplate at the end, like braided cords of pure gold.
Genesis 8:7: Then he sent out a raven, which kept going to and fro until the waters had dried up from the earth.
Deuteronomy 34:6: And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor; but no one knows his grave to this day.
2Kingdoms (2Samuel) 6:23: Therefore, Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.
Hebrews 2:11, & 17(v. 11): For both He who [a]sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren (v. 17): Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
Hebrews 12:23: to the [a]general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect,
(vv. 13:1-3; vv. 10-12, and vv. 14-16 – THEY ARE HIGHLIGHTED: These passages are read as the first reading of the Feast of the Meeting of Our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ …
13:22: THE PILLAR OF CLOUD by day and the pillar of fire by night speak of baptism, the sacrament of illumination or enlightenment – (1Corinthians 10:1-4 – will be our closing after we read Psalm 72 (73)): The Cloud itself is a foreshadowing of the Holy Spirit, who in baptism cools the flame of the sinful passions – (BasilG): As one walks in his baptism, the Holy Spirit enlightens us all on the pathway to the resurrection from the dead and the life of the world to come …
PSALM 72 (73) Study Guide & Breakdown
Psalm 72 (73) teaches THE UPRIGHT IN HEART – (v. 1) not be jealous of people who prosper in this life but who have no vision of “the resurrection of the dead and life of the world to come” – (Nicene Creed) … For their vision of life is limited to this present world, and they have NO UPWARD GAZE of the judgement hanging over them AT THEIR DEATH – (v. 4) … But the upright has a vision of God in their heart – (O God of my heart) and of the world to come – (FOREVER, v. 26) … Therefore, they CLING TO GOD and put their HOPE IN THE LORD – (v. 28) …
CLOSING …
I CORINTHIANS 10:1-4
Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.
- Israel’s liberation from Egypt by Moses prefigures our liberation from sin by Christ … THE CLOUD is a symbol of the HOLY SPIRIT; THE SEA, of water and baptism; THE ROCK – (v. 4), of the body of Christ, His humanity; and the SPIRITUAL DRINK, of Christ’s blood … Jesus Himself linked these events of the Passover with the Eucharist when He established it – (Matthew 26:17-29) …
Christ is our hope, He is our Rock the One Who calms our storms along the ragging seas … He is the One Who feels me with peace when I feel the darkness arising … He is the One Who calms the flames of despair, when I feel there is no hope in sight … He is the One Who understands when I feel no one else gets it … He is the One Who in the night says my child stay the course, because prayer is your guidance … Lastly, He is the One Who will never leave my sight, because He is truly in our midst, look up and smile because our redemption draws near to the One Who sees us all …
