Good evening. Great is His faithfulness.
This evening's readings brought up a few thoughts. Our Lord was rejected in Nazareth because He reminded the people they needed to enter into a relationship with God and be totally dependent on Him in order to be saved. The Jews on the other hand rejected this notion because they believed being the seeds of Abraham that they had no spiritual debt, but Jesus reminds them otherwise all must repent or perish. Some Christian denominations teach a "Once saved always saved" message how dangerous is this doctrine? Many Christian denominations are making the same mistake as the ancient Jews of Jesus' time was making.
Jesus calls the four fishermen to gather up as many fish all they can meaning all kinds of people. Jesus will sort out the good and the bad at the end of the age. The net is still gathering to this day so open your ears and hear the good news of the Gospel today.
Proverbs 21:10: "When the intemperate man is punished, the simple man becomes more astute, and a wiseman of understanding shall receive knowledge."
This verse made me think of the situation Jesus was in Nazareth. THE INTEMPERATE MAN is an example of someone who moves their free will in the wrong direction, and begin to have a lack of self control. The punishment he receives is his own fault like not repenting and rejecting God's salvation is a ticket to Hades. THE SIMPLE MAN is one who is beginning to move his Will towards Wisdom (Christ) and His virtues, meaning getting into a relationship with our Creator. Astuteness is the crown of the wise (Proverbs 14:25: "The crown of the wise is astuteness, but the pastime of the undiscerning is evil.") and is one of the general virtues. UNDERSTANDING is another aspect of this crown. Therefore, when the simple man truly observes the punishment the intemperate brings on himself, he becomes wiser. Understanding is what ultimately leads us into a relationship with Christ and to reject Him leads to Hades.
