DAY39: COMPASSION - (Matthew 9:35-36) - “JESUS IS PERFECT LOVE” The Chosen 40 Days with Jesus Book2

Welcome back

Matthew 9:35-36

The Compassion of Jesus

35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease [a]among the people. 36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were [b]weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.

Jesus is not condemning sinners in v. 36, but instead our Lord sees them as lost sheep needing to be found and brought home. COMPASSION means "suffering with." The illustration of SHEEP HAVING NO SHEEP, comes from the old testament- (sources, Numbers 27:17; 3Kingdoms 22:17; and Ezekiel 34:5), is seen as an accusation against the Jewish leaders who, charged with the duties and responsibilities of shepherds, but instead acted like wolves.

Numbers 27:17: who may go out before them and go in before them, who may lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the Lord may not be like sheep which have no shepherd.”

3Kingdoms 22:17 (1 Kings 22:17): Then he said, “I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd. And the Lord said, ‘These have no master. Let each return to his house in peace.’

Ezekiel 34:5: So they were scattered because there was no shepherd; and they became food for all the beasts of the field when they were scattered.

My examples of Jesus' compassion that stand out to me from the Scriptures.

Matthew 14:14: And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.

Matthew 20:34: So Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes. And immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him.

John 11:34-38: 34 And He said, “Where have you laid him?”

They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.”

35 Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”

37 And some of them said, “Could not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying?”

Lazarus Raised from the Dead

38 Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
