2 TIMOTHY INTRODUCTION & 2 TIMOTHY 1 STUDY GUIDE & BREAKDOWN

INTRODUCTION 2 TIMOTHY

AUTHOR- St. Paul the Apostle… by the second half of the second century the entire Church accepted 2 Timothy as Pauline and canonical…

DATE- AD 65-67…This letter was written from Rome – (2 Timothy 1:17) when Paul was chained, suffering, and near his execution…

MAJOR THEME- OVERCOMING HARDSHIP IN THE MINISTRY… Ordained ministers use their spiritual gifts in the Church to keep and pass on her living tradition-the Bible and the ongoing life of the Holy Spirit in the Body of Christ- the Church remains essentially as she was at her inception… (see also- (2 Timothy 1:13-14; 2 Timothy 2:2, 8, 11-13, & 15; 2 Timothy 3:14-17; & 2 Timothy 4:3)…

BACKGROUND- Paul has been a prisoner in Rome for sometime now…No one stood him at his first hearing, he successfully defended himself and “was delivered out of the mouth of the lion” – (2Timothy 4:16, 17)…Nonetheless, he has no hope for acquittal…He knows his end is at hand (2Timothy 4:6-8)…Worse, friends have turned against him – (2Timothy 1:15; and 2Timothy 4:16-18); only Luke is assisting him…Paul longs to see Timothy once more… This is probably Paul’s last letter…because he knows his martyrdom is near and looks forward to being with the Lord (2Timothy 4:8) …Paul was martyred under the Emperor Nero around AD 67…

2 TIMOTHY 1 STUDY GUIDE & BREAKDOWN

GREETING – (2Timothy 1:1-2)

1 Paul, an apostle of [a]Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

2 To Timothy, a beloved son:

Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

THANKSGIVING FOR TIMOTHY – (2Timothy 1:3-5)

3 I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, 4 greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, 5 when I call to remembrance the [b]genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.

TIMOTHY’S GIFT, THE POWER OF GOD – (2Timothy 1:6-12)

6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, 9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, 10 but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11 to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher [c]of the Gentiles. 12 For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless, I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.

NOTES

1:6: THE GIFT OF GOD is the grace of the Holy Spirit, or charism, given Timothy at his ordination…This grace fills up what is lacking and gives authenticity to the priesthood…But it is not automatic…We must STIR UP and rekindle it…

1:7: ANY CHRISTIAN MAY BE PERSECUTED – (John 15:20; see Matthew 5:11-12, and see my notes), we reject feelings of fear or timidity…We do not “quench the Spirit” (1Thessalonians 5:19), but act with power and courage – (see also 2Timothy 2:12; see also Matthew 10:33; Luke 9:26)

1:9: OUR SALVATION AND CALLING are based on HIS GRACE and LOVE, not on anything we have done to merit God’s favor – (Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3:5-6) …

1:10: “HE SUBMITTED” (SUFFERING) so that he might break the power of Death and demonstrate tom us all the power of His Resurrection from the dead-So it was necessary for him to be manifested in the flesh… Also (he submitted) so that he might fulfill the promise to the fathers and, while he was preparing the new people for himself and while he was still on earth, to prove that after he was brought about the resurrection he will judge” – (Barnabas 5:6-7) …

FIDELITY IN SPITE OF DESERTIONS – (2Timothy 1:13-18)

13 Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 14 That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

15 This you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. 16 The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; 17 but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very zealously and found me. 18 The Lord grant to him that he may find mercy from the Lord in that Day—and you know very well how many ways he ministered [d]to me at Ephesus.

NOTES

1:13-14: THE PATTERN OF SOUND WORDS (v. 13) is oral apostolic tradition WHICH YOU HAVE HEARD… It holds the same weight as written apostolic tradition – (see also 2Timothy 2:2; and 2Thessalonians 2:5) … Oral or written, this Holy Tradition is rooted in CHRIST JESUS (v. 13) and kept by the HOLY SPIRIT WHO DWELLS IN US (v. 14) …

1:18: Perhaps Onesiphorus is dead… The Church has never hesitated to pray for her departed that they MAY FIND MERCY from God on the DAYOF THE LORD… (The first Lord in the verse refers to the Son, the second is referring to the Father) …

PSALM 51 (52) STUDY GUIDE & BREAKDOWN

NOTES – (BibleGateway NKJV has 9 verses for Psalm 52- Mine has 11 verses) …

PSALM 51 (52)- Revolves around two questions, both of which relate to Christ – (THE END, v. 1) … the first question asks: DO ALL THE WORKERS OF LAWLESSNESS NOT KNOW??? (v. 5), and the second, WHO WILL BRING FROM ZION THE SALVATION OF ISRAEL??? (v. 7): The answer to the first question is yes, for they willfully reject Christ as God, and therefore are fools – (v. 1) … But, in answer to the second question, their rejection cannot prevent Him from granting salvation to the Church – (“Israel”, v. 7; see also Galatians 6:16) …

CLOSING

THE POWER OF GOD IN ALL WE DO!!!

1 CORITHIANS 1:10

10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all [a]speak the same thing, and that there be no [b]divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment

WE MUST PUT AWAY OUR DIFFERENCES AND DIVISIONS AND WORK AT MAINTAINING UNITY AS ONE IN THE BODY OF CHRIST!!!

JAMES 4:7

Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you…

WE MUST FULLY SUMBIT TO THE LORD, REMEMBER SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO REKINDLE OUR HOLY SPIRIT FROM TIME TO TIME WITH PRAYER AND FASTING … KEEP RESITING THE EVIL, SHUN IT AND DO GOOD ALWAYS, THE POWER OF GOD CAN OVERCOME EVERYTHING GIVING US THE PEACE WE NEED!!!
