Matthew 26 Study & Breakdown/ No Peace With The Psalms/ Message about Patience!!! No Video!!!

Updated: Feb 5, 2022

Welcome back to JPCE SPIRITUAL TALK BIBLE STUDIES: Today is Matthew 26 there will be no scripture read or video, I have a sore throat and my voice is hoarse!!! This is strictly a write up and I do apologize hopefully tomorrow the videos will resume if not than hopefully by Monday!!! Either way the write ups will continue as part of our studying for now...I'm feeling a little under the weather but not too bad either, but I do have chronic COPD so any cold I get can be bad and lead to other problems, but without anymore hesitations lets get to the study!!!

WEDNESDAY: THE SANHEDRIN'S CONSPIRACY SEE ALSO (MARK 14:1-2; LUKE 22:1-2)

MATTHEW 26:1-5:

26:2: YESHUA (JESUS) IS DELIVERED UP: To His Passion by His accusers, He goes willingly: Unless Christ had willed to go, His accusers could never have taken Him: After His Resurrection, saints would imitate Christ by willingly going to martyrdom!!!

ANOINTING FOR BURIAL SEE ALSO (MARK 14:3-9; JOHN 12:1-8)

MATTHEW 26:6-13

26:6-13: YESHUA (JESUS) ACCEPTS THIS HONOR: from the woman in her newly found faith: He accepts it as a sign of His coming BURIAL (v. 12): Nerveless, according to early saints, the DISCIPLES were not wrong in principle: mercy shown to the POOR is more fitting than outward signs shown even to God, see (Matthew 25:40; James 1:27): They did not understand that once the gift had been given, it was greater mercy to accept it with love: "if anyone had asked Christ before the woman did this, he would not have approved it. But after she had done it, He looks only to the gift itself. For after the FRAGRANT OIL had been poured, what good was a rebuke??? Likewise, if you should see anyone providing a sacred vessel or ornament for the walls of the Church, do not spoil his zeal. But if beforehand he asks about it, command him to give instead to the poor" (JohnChr) : St. John Chrysostom: Caesarius of Arles

26:6: SIMON THE LEPER: must have been healed by Yeshua (Jesus) earlier, for lepers' were forbidden to live in towns...

26:13: BECAUSE OF HER FERVENT FAITH: Yeshua (Jesus) promises perpetual public memory of THIS WOMAN: There is no consensus among early saints as to her identity in relation to accounts similar to ones in (Mark 14:3-9; Luke 7:36-38, and John 12:1-8): Some early Fathers and Saints that there were three different women in these four accounts , others say that there were only two!!!

JUDAS BETRAYS YESHUA (JESUS) SEE ALSO (MARK 14:10-11; LUKE 23:3-5)

MATTHEW 26:14-16

26:14-16: JUDAS: On his own initiative seeks to betray Yeshua (Jesus): His motives have been debated by many early Saint's, Father's and even scholars- many agree that greed was his primary motive on betraying of the Son of God!!! (John 12:4-6), is where Judas was in particularly upset about the waste of myrrh in the preceding story because he was a thief, see also (1 Timothy 6:10) : THE PHRASE ONE OF THE TWELVE is not used so much to identify Judas, who was also know by Matthew's hearers, but was pointing more to the the depth of betrayal, that it was of Christ's closet followers!!!

THURSDAY: THE PASSOVER MEAL SEE ALSO (MARK 14:12-21; LUKE 22:7-16, 21-30; JOHN 13:21-30)

MATTHEW 26:17-25

26:17-19: THE PASSOVER: Commemorates God's deliverance of Israel from slavery from Egypt to the Promised Land: It also is prefiguring the Passion of Christ, the new Passover (Greek- Pascha), God's redemption for all of humanity from both sin and death, and giving us the entrance into the Kingdom of God that is promised to all those in the faith!!! WHETHER THE FIRST DAY OF THE FEAST was Passover or the day before the Passover is debated among early Saints, Fathers, and scholars- (see John 19:14)- what is certain for sure is that Yeshua (Jesus) regarded the meal with the disciples to be the Passover meal!!!

26:24-25: THAT IT IS WRITTEN OF HIM: does not cancel Judas' responsibility: The Lord God foresees but does cause evil actions in humans, who themselves have free will (see Luke 22:3): Yeshua allows Judas to accuse himself, hearing that Christ knew of his deception, Judas does not repent!!!

INSTITUTION OF THE EUCHARIST SEE ALSO (MARK 14:22-26; LUKE 22:15-20)

MATTHEW 26:26-30

26:26-28: JESUS INSTITUTES THE EUCHARIST: the long awaited messianic banquet, to which He admits even Judas (see, read and compare Esther 7), seeking by all means to save Him: Because of his wicked heart, Judas participation leads to his condemnation- (1 Corinthians 11:27-30): Christ's words are repeated in Divine Liturgy, inviting the faithful to receive His BODY AND BLOOD. In Holy Communion, we are truly united to Christ- (see, Luke 22:19-20): HE GAVE THANKS (FROM THE GREEK WORD "EUCHARIST)- to teach us (1): how to celebrate this sacrament, (2): that He comes willingly to His Passion, and (3): to accept sufferings with thankfulness, knowing that the Lord can use sufferings for the ultimate good!!! THE OLD COVENANT: was sealed with blood of bulls and goats: The New is sealed by the gift of Christ, WHO SHED HIS OWN BLOOD to conquer sins and death to get us back to God: Christ calls it THE BLOOD OF THE NEW COVENANT, which is God's promise and the fulfillment of the Law: by, New, He means this covenant brings immortality and incorruptible life; this covenant will always have the quality of newness: FOR MANY: SEE MATTHEW 20:24-28 refer back to my Matthew 20 notes for comparison!!!

26:29: EARLY SAINTS TEACH: that Yeshua (Jesus) also drinks the cup of His own Blood: This He does to lead all believers into the participation in His heavenly mysteries: IN MY FATHER'S KINGDOM relates to the time after His Resurrection, when Christ will eat and drink to show the reality of His victory over death (Luke 24:41-43)- furthermore it's pointing to the eternal banquet of the Kingdom in the age to come:

PREDICTION OF PETER'S DENIAL SEE ALSO (MARK 14:27-31; LUKE 22:31-38; JOHN 13:36-38)

MATTHEW 26: 31-35

-Could have Simon Peter's denial of three times of Christ something that had to be done to strengthen his faith for the times to come???

GETHSEMANE: YESHUA (JESUS)' PRAYERS SEE ALSO (MARK 14:32-42; LUKE 22:39-46; JOHN 18:1)

MATTHEW 26:36-46

26:39: THIS CUP: Is referring to Christ's impending death: His divine nature, Jesus willingly goes to His death: As a man, He wishes He could avoid it: For the sake of all humanity He had to die on the Cross at His own Free Will to conquer death by death setting up the pathway to eternal life!!! He PRAYS IF IT IS POSSIBLE that is to be taken from Him, showing us evidence of His human nature: Jesus is without sin and completely subjects and unites His human WILL to the Father's divine WILL!!!

26:41: WATCH AND PRAY: The key to Christian spirituality and all of our struggles in temptations: The Lord's human soul is strengthened, and He faces death with divine courage: The disciples slept, while our Lord had His own vigilance!!! Body and soul are united, THE SPIRIT is paralyzed by a lethargic body: A WILLING SPIRIT: recognizing the weakness of the FLESH, struggles against weakness, relying on God's presence and power!!!

BETRAYED, ARRESTED, FORSAKEN SEE ALSO (MARK 14:43-52; LUKE 22:47-53; JOHN 18:2-12)

MATTHEW 26:47-56

26:52-54: JESUS REBUKES PETER (identified in John 18:10): for using THE SWORD, for he still does not understand that Christ is going willingly to His death, so that salvation for mankind be FULFILLED: A legion is 6,000 soldiers, so TWELVE LEGIONS EQUALS 72,000 ANGELS: That this death was foretold in THE SCRIPTURES served to strengthen the disciples at their hour of greatest test!!!

BEFORE CAIAPHAS AND THE SANHEDRIN SEE ALSO (MARK 14:53-65; LUKE 22:54, 63-65; JOHN 18:13-24)

MATTHEW 26:57-68

26:61: THE PEOPLE MISUNDERSTAND THE LORD'S WORDS: Reported in ( John 2:19-21) Some Jews believed THE TEMPLE would be destroyed and a new one built by the Messiah:

- John 2:19-21: 19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”

21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body.

26:64-66: QUOTING FROM PSALM 109 AND DANIEL 7:13, Yeshua (Jesus) confesses that He is the Messiah, both fully MAN AND FULLY GOD, for only a divine One could sit AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE POWER, sharing authority with the Father: This statement was clearly understood by THE HIGH PRIEST to be claim of equality with God the Father (v. 65): For a mere man to claim this was punishable by death- (Leviticus 24:16), but Christ is no mere man, and thus this declaration of equality is not BLASPHEMY!!!

PETER'S THREE DENIALS SEE ALSO (MARK 14:54, 66-72; LUKE 22:54-62; JOHN 18:15-18, 25-27)

MATTHEW 26:69-75

26:69-75: SEE LUKE 22:56, AND 61: Notes coming from Luke see verse 56: A GIRL being the first to test Peter is an icon of the temptation of Adam and Eve (GENESIS 3:6): Our fallen state is overcome in Christ when women are the first to hear, believe, and proclaim the Resurrection (Matthew 24:1-10): Now see verse 61 and 62 of Luke 22- Peter is so overcome with fear that neither Christ's prediction (v. 34 in Luke 22) nor the crowning of THE ROOSTER calls him to repentance, but only the Lord's gaze causes him to weep BITTERLY: Neverless, "through tears, what cannot be defended can be purged, for tears wash away the offense which is shameful to confess out loud"- (AmbM): St. Hilary of Poitiers- Ambrose of Milan:

MESSAGE ABOUT PATIENCE:

ECCLESIASTES 7:5-10:

5 It is better to [a]hear the rebuke of the wise

Than for a man to hear the song of fools.

6 For like the [b]crackling of thorns under a pot,

So is the laughter of the fool.

This also is vanity.

7 Surely oppression destroys a wise man’s reason,

And a bribe [c]debases the heart.

8 The end of a thing is better than its beginning;

The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

9 Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry,

For anger rests in the bosom of fools.

10 Do not say,

“Why were the former days better than these?”

For you do not inquire wisely concerning this

-In Christ, THE SONG OF SENSLESS MEN has been turned into the worship of the faithful, not the latter days, not the former days, are better (v. 10)- So much for the good old days!!!

-what a great takeaway it doesn't matter how we start but only matters how we finish, In Christ all things are possible, because of Him my ministry is going in the right direction, that's because of patience and faith in Him!!!
