ABUSES OF AUTHORITY SEE ALSO (MARK 12:38-39; LUKE 20:45-46

MATTHEW 23:1-12

23:1-39: YESHUA (JESUS) SPOKE: His final public sermon critiquing the ways of the scribes and Pharisees. Few Examples: (1): The Jewish leaders have God-given authority to teach God's Law, but are personally ungodly and hearts have grown cold: Their teaching is to be honored, but they are not be imitated (vv. 2-7): (2): God, The Lord is our true Father and Teacher: A teacher or father here on earth is one who leads people to the Lord our God: The scribes and Pharisees do the opposite, by placing themselves in the position of God (vv. 8-12): (3): In His eightfold indictment of the scribes and Pharisees (vv. 13-36), Yeshua (Jesus) charges them with changing God's values as well as being mean spirited, very judgmental, greedy, ambitious, and absorbed in externals-materialism, and blindly self-righteous: These charges were directed against the Jewish Leaders of Yeshuas' time, but every word applies equally to those in the Church today who behaves in this manner!!!

23:2-3: TO SIT IN MOSES' SEAT: Is implying to hold succession of office down from Moses himself. In the synagogue, the teacher spoke while being shown as a sign of this authority: St. John Chrysostom notes "that the scribes were depraved in thought and in heart, yet Jesus still upholds the dignity of their office, for they speak not their own words but God's":

23:5: PHYLACTERIES: are small leather pouches that contained passages of Scripture worn on someone's arm or forehead: The point or the idea was to keep God's Law in mind, see also (Exodus 13:9), but the Pharisees had used them as a show of false piety, making them larger and more noticeable!!!

23:8-10: CHRIST'S WARNING AGAINST CALLING HYPOCRITES FATHER AND TEACHER: Is not an absolute ending to using these terms, as some may teach: These terms are applied to us all many times in the NT, all usages are inspired by God: Teacher is used in (John 3:10; Acts 13:1; 1 Corinthians 12:28; Ephesians 4:11 and in 1 Timothy 1:11- Father is used in Luke 16:24; 1 Corinthians 4:15; and Colossians 3:21): Since the early days of the Church, bishops, and presbyters have been called FATHER not because they are taking place of God, but due to their fatherly care of their flocks, they lead people to the Lord, and they also exercise fatherly authority within the community!!!

PRONOUNCEMENT OF JUDGEMENT SEE ALSO (MARK 12:40; LUKE 20:47)

MATTHEW 23:13-36:

23:13: EXAMPLE OF LEADER: Can be so so influential, so leaders who do not truly love the Lord and His words can hinder others from truly receiving Him as well: Thus, leaders are held to a higher standard (James 3:1):

23:23-33: THESE WARNINGS: are very important to Orthodox Christians: The Church has maintained the ancient practices of tithing (These you ought to have done, v. 23, I will read St. John Chrysostom's homily on Ephesians 2, I also referenced chapter 9 of the Didascalia Apostolorum); sacred vessels (v. 25); holy rites (v. 27); and following the traditions handed down by our fathers: These practices can be seen as deep expressions of faith, and can lead a person to a deeper commitment of God, and safeguard our lives in Christ, or they can be observed without ever taking them to heart and lead to condemnation!!!

23:24: THE PHARISEES: would attach strainers to the mouths of decanters to avoid accidentally consuming a ritually unclean substance:

23:35: ZECHARAIH: SEE LUKE 11:51 READ NOTES SEE VIDEO CONTENT

THE FATE OF JERUSALEM SEE ALSO (LUKE 13:34-35)

MATTHEW 23:37-39:

23:37-39: GOD'S DEEPEST DESIRE: is the reconciliation of His people, but many do not want Him: The desolate house (v. 38) refers to the temple and to the nation itself, for house can be used to mean family or even tribe (see also, Psalms 113:20; Psalms 134:19): both the temple and the nation will be without God's presence once Christ departs!!!

23:29-39: This passage is read on days commemorating holy prophets!!!

NO PEACE WITH THE PSALMS

MESSAGE ABOUT MODESITY!!!

PROVERBS 29:23

Arrogance humbles a man, But the Lord supports the humble-minded with glory.

-The Lord will allow a man's arrogance to humble him, so if it's possible he might in fact learn humility. We are taught from the Bible that the Lord only supports the humble-minded, and we aren't to be boastful individuals!!! We are to be wise as serpents but harmless as doves, we are to be teachers of truth, shun evil and do good always living in the Spirit seeking truth and righteousness!!!
