Welcome back to JPCE SPIRITUAL TALK BIBLE STUDIES: Today is Matthew 16 we have 28 verses to cover so lets jump right into our study!!!
MATTHEW 16:1-28:
JEWISH LEADERS TEST YESHUA (JESUS), SEE ALSO (MARK 8:10-13):
MATTHEW 16:1-4:
16:1-4: A SIGN FROM HEAVEN: Would be a spectacular display of power for Yeshua!!! His earthly time and ministry as the Messiah was expected to have many great signs, but the Pharisees and Jewish leaders were hypocrites and failed to recognize the signs that were already on display!!! Their hearts were harden and their eyes were shut they were blinded by their own hypocrisy!!!
16:4: ADULTEROUS GENERATION: Read Matthew 12:39: Yeshua (Jesus) refuses to prove Himself in that way with His spectacular power, for a sign is never given to those whose motive is to test the Lord our God, see also (Matthew 4:5-7): THE SIGN OF THE PROPHET JONAH: Is in interpreted as a veiled prediction of Christ's death and Resurrection, see also (Matthew 12:40), the ultimate sign that Yeshua (Jesus) is the Christ!!!
THE PHARISEE'S FALSE DOCTRINE, SEE ALSO (MARK 8:14-21)
MATTHEW 16:5-12:
16:5-12: THE LEAVEN OF THE PHARISEES: (v. 6) is their doctrine (v. 12) and their hypocrisy (Luke 12:2): The disciples have a hard time understanding because of their little faith, (v. 8); and they would not fully understand His teachings until after Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was given!!!
YESHUA (JESUS) IS THE CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD, SEE ALSO (MARK 8:27-30; LUKE 9:18-21)
MATTHEW 16:13-20:
16:13-20: "WHY DO YOU SAY THAT I AM??? (v. 15): is the greatest question a person can ever face, it is a question that to this day defines Christianity: Peter's correct answer to this question prevents the Christian faith from being seen as just another philosophical system or path of spirituality, for this names Yeshua (Jesus) as the One and Only the True Son of the Living God!!! (Read 1 Corinthians 12:3): Note: Christ first calls out false opinions about Himself (vv. 13, 14): He is doing this to identify incorrect and false ideas about Him and His teachings!!!
16:18: PETER/ROCK: THE WORD "ROCK" in both Aramaic and Greek (petros/petra): It's not referring to Peter in that way, but in was pointing to "THE FAITH OF HIS CONFESSION" (JohnChr): The true Rock is Christ Himself (1 Corinthians 10:4), and the Church true believers-followers of Yeshua is built on the faithful confession of Christ!!! GATES OF HADES: Powers of death!!! In the OT, gates are a fortified city (Genesis 22:17; 24:60; Isaiah 14:31): The term Church is mentioned twice in all the Gospels, here in and also found in Matthew 18:17: This Church is the true Israel and the Body of Christ; her citizenship is heavenly!!!
16:19: KEYS OF THE KINGDOM: Is referring to special authority that will be given to both Peter and the other apostles after the Resurrection of Christ, see also (Matthew 18:18; John 20:23): Peter was not a leader over the other apostles, but was a leader among them. This was confirmed at the Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15) where the apostles and presbyters met as equals, and where Peter advised, but James presided!!! Binding and loosing is a reference to authority "to absolve sins" (JohnChr; see also John 20:23):
YESHUAS' (JESUS') WORK: HIS PASSION AND RESURRECTION, SEE ALSO (MARK 8:31-9:1; LUKE 9:22-27):
MATTHEW 16:21-28:
16:21-23: AFTER PETER'S CONFESSION: Yeshua (Jesus) reveals the true nature of His Mission and Ministry of being the Messiah: The mystery of His Passion: It was expected that the Messiah would reign forever, so the idea of Christ having to die was confusing and overwhelming for Simon Peter to handle...and to this day reminds scandalous to the Jews even after His Resurrection, see (1 Corinthians 1:23), Peter is unwittingly speaks for Satan, as the Satan himself did not want Christ to fulfill His mission and save mankind through His own suffering at His own Free Will even in death to conquer death by death!!!
16:24: THE CROSS: It was an instrument of Roman punishment, it also symbolizes the suffering by Christians in imitation of Christ: We practice self-denial for the sake of the love of the Lord our God and for the Gospel: Accepting this suffering is not seen as an punishment, nor as the end either, but as a means to overcome this fallen world for the sake of the Kingdom and to crucify the flesh with its passions and desires, see (Galatians 5:24):
16:25: THE CENTRAL PARADOX OF CHRISTIAN LIVING: Grasping for temporal things, we lose the eternal; but in sacrificing everything in this world, we gain eternal riches that are unimaginable (1 Corinthians 2:9):
16:26: WHAT WILL A MAN GIVE IN EXCHANGE FOR HIS SOUL???: This question is showing us the complete foolishness of gaining worldly wealth or even power here on earth, for none of this can redeem a person's soul, nor benefit a person in the life to come:
16:28: TRANSFIRGURATION: This is a reference to those who witnessed this, see (Matthew 17:1-9), as well as those in every generation who will experience the presence of God's Kingdom!!!
