Luke 5 & Luke 6 Study & Breakdown/ Message About Hypocrisy!!!

LUKE 5

FOUR FISHERMEN CALLED- See also (Matthew 4:18-22; Mark 1:16-20)

Luke 5:1-11

5:1: THE LAKE OF GENNESARET: is also known as the Sea of Galilee: It is about 13 miles long and 7 miles wide:

5:3: SITTING: was the traditional position for a teacher (see, my Matthew 5:1, notes and study):

5:4: LAUNCH OUT INTO THE DEEP: St. Ambrose sees the spiritual meaning of this command as an invitation to give one's life over to the deep mystery of the knowledge of the Son of God!!!

5:6: THE LORD DRAWS PEOPLE TO HIMSELF: by things that are very well known to them: As He drew the Magi with a star, (Matthew 2:2), as He would draw tax collectors by a tax collector (Luke 5:29), here He draws the fishermen with FISH- (1 Corinthians 9:19-23):

5:8: PETER'S CRY: in the face of divine power is not rejection of JESUS (contrast see Luke 8:37): rather, being cast into the light of Christ, holy people such as PETER become aware of their own unworthiness- (compare Isaiah 6:5; Revelation 1:17:):

Isaiah 6:5- So I said:

“Woe is me, for I am [a]undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The Lord of hosts.”

Revelation 1:17: And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying [a]to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.

5:10: THE GREAT CATCH: of fish (v. 9) is showing us an image of the apostles bringing mankind to the knowledge of Jesus Christ, also fulfilling the prophecy of (Jeremiah 16:16): “Behold, I will send for many fishermen,” says the Lord, “and they shall fish them; and afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.

JESUS CLEANSES A LEPER- See also (Matthew 8:1-4; Mark 1:40-45)

Luke 5:12-16

5:12: LEPROSY: was one of the most dreaded diseases of the time: it brought great amounts of suffering not to mention the total banishment and isolation from society, it was seen a symbol of sin!!!

5:14: SHOW YOURSELF TO THE PRIEST: Christ gives this command to convince the priests by a tangible miracle that He is superior to MOSES- (CyrAl): the priests hold Moses to be greater than Christ, yet Christ heals a leper immediately and with His own divine authority: When Miriam was struck with leprosy, Moses had to seek mercy from above, and still she was only healed after seven days (Numbers 12:10-15):

JESUS FORGIVES SINS- See also (Matthew 9:1-8; Mark 2:1-12)

Luke 5:17-26

5:17-26: see my Matthew 9:2-8-Notes: 9:2-8: Healing the paralytic, shows that faith is an indispensable condition for salvation: Faith is both collective and personal, for the faith of the paralytic's friends helped in his healing (v. 2): Three signs of Yeshuas' divinity are being shown here: (1): He knows our hearts and all of our secrets He knows our thoughts (1Kg 16:7; 2 Chronicles 6:30); (2): He forgive sins, a power that only rest with the Lord our God proving they are in One Essence of each other, (3): Lastly He Heals by the power of His Word!!!

JESUS INVITES MATTHEW, A SINNER- See also (Matthew 9:9-13; Mark 2:13-17)

Luke 5:27-32

5:27: LEVI (MATTHEW): answers Christ' call "FOLLOW ME"- and leaves his occupation to become a disciple: Christ was always a friend of tax collectors and sinner's, which was the entire point of His earthly ministry!!! The Pharisees had this complaint against Yeshua (Jesus) in (v. 30): Levi may have also been one of the TAX COLLECTORS prepared for Christ by john the Baptist- (Luke 3:12)

5:29: THIS FEAST: expresses Matthew's joy and gratitude's: The guest register is a stirring demonstration of the fruit of Jesus' love and forgiveness!!!

WHEN DOES JESUS FAST???- See also (Matthew 9:14-17; Mark 2:18-22)

Luke 5:33-39

5:33-39: JESUS' EARTHLY LIFE: is a time of joyous blessings: The time will come when His followers will practice the FAST- (See, my notes Matthew 9:14-17; and Mark 2:20):

5:39: THIS SAYING OCCURS ONLY IN LUKE'S ACCOUNT: and illustrates (1) the difficulty of the Jews accepting a new covenant (2) the inner resistance a person faces in turning from a sinful way of life, and (3) the general stubbornness of the human heart!!!

LUKE 6

THE LORD OF THE SABBATH- See also (Matthew 12:1-8; Mark 2:23-28)

Luke 6:1-5

6:1-5: SECOND SABBATH AFTER THE FIRST: this term was used when a Jewish feast immediately followed the normal Sabbath, for a feast was also known as a Sabbath: According to St. Ambrose, the term "second Sabbath"- Serves as an image of the New Covenant and the eternal resurrection: The First Sabbath indicates the Law, while the Second Sabbath indicates the gospel that follows it: Under the New Covenant, the food which was one time NOT LAWFUL for anyone but the priests to eat is now freely given to all by the LORD OF THE SABBATH (v. 5); DAVID- prefigured this when he gave SHOWBREAD...TO THOSE WITH HIM- (vv. 3, 4)

HEALING ON THE SABBATH- See also (Matthew 12:9-14; Mark 3:1-6)

Luke 6:6-11

6:7: THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES: because of certain traditions they had built up around the Law that healing was considered work, and so was not permissible ON THE SABBATH:

THE TWELVE CHOSEN- See also (Matthew 10:1-4; Mark 3:13-19)

Luke 6:12-16

6:12-13: JESUS, BEING THE SON OF GOD, DOES NOT PRAY: as if to obtain grace or revelation from the Father: As the Son of Man, he prays to Advocate for humanity (AmbM; see 1 John 2:1): JESUS SPENT ALL NIGHT IN PRAYER: before selecting the TWELVE APOSTLES to teach us that before choosing a candidate for any spiritual ministry- we should pray that God reveals to us the one suited for the task- (Theoph):

6:14-16: See my Matthew 10:1-4- Notes: Matthew 10- The Twelve Chosen: Matthew 10:1-4:- Disciples (v. 1), apostles, (v. 2)- these terms are interchangeable for the first twelve!!! Yeshua gave them authority to perform miracles and trample serpents, casting out demons!!! See Mark 6:7- they were sent out two by two!!!

CROWDS FOLLOW JESUS- See also (Matthew 4:24-25; Matthew 12:15-16; Mark 3:7-12)

Luke 6:17-19

6:17-49: See my Notes (Matthew 5-7): This Sermon on the Plain (level place, v. 17) is similar in content to the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), though not as extensive: Jesus repeated many of His teachings over a period of time of three and half years- (see, also John 2:23)

THE BEATITUDES, THE WOES- See also (Matthew 5:1-12)

Luke 6:20-26

6:24-26: LUKE REPORTS FOUR "WOES": not found in Matthew's account: WOE is an indication not merely of sorrow, but of unspeakable destruction (Isaiah 5:18-24; Amos 5:18-19; Revelation 12:12): Those who prize the vices listed here are liable to the utmost misery; they found hope when they sacrifice their earthly blessings in showing mercy to others- (CyrAl)

LOVE OF ENEMIES- See also (Matthew 5:38-48)

Luke 6:27-36

6:31: THE GOLDEN RULE: places human desire for goodness (the natural law of self love, CyrAl) this is the standard we are to treat others: It is also considered to be the first step on the path to the perfection of virtue; this perfection is found in (v. 36), where God's mercy, rather than mankind's desire, is the standard!!!

BE MERICFUL- See also (Matthew 7:1-5)

Luke 6:37-42

6:37-38: MERCY PRECLUDES HUMAN JUDGEMENT: GOOD MEASURE, PRESSED DOWN, SHAKEN TOGETHER, AND RUNNING OVER: Are descriptions of how an honest and generous merchant would measure bulk goods: Flour pressed down, for example, would yield a more generous amount of flour fluffed up: The blessings God intends to put into our hearts are more generous than we could ever imagine or even contain: yet this all depends on the spirit in which we ourselves GIVE AND FORGIVE!!!

6:40: CHRIST DOES NOT JUDGE ANYONE: (John 8:15; and John 12:47): Therefore, "if the Teacher does not judge, neither must the disciple, for the disciple is guilty of worse sins than those for which he judges others"- (CyrAl)

BEWARE OF HYPOCRISY- See also (Matthew 7:15-27)

Luke 6:43-49

6:46-49: HEARING THE GOSPEL: alone is not enough, salvation is based not on hearing it alone, because it is a gift from God's grace: It's not based off faith alone either, but is based on doing THE THINGS SPOKEN BY CHRIST- See also (James 2:24)

Message about Hypocrisy!!!

1 Peter 2:1:

Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking,

-These above evils block all of our understandings of each other-we must live a life that desires Christ so much it reflects the greatness in us all-when we are exhausted and beat down we continue serve Christ, we might not always have a smile, but on the inside our spirit is following with living water!!!

-There can't be peace without understanding but in order for this to occur we must take off the blinders of evil that weighing us down in hypocrisy!!!
