Luke 3 Study & Breakdown/ Message about Salvation!!!

LUKE 3

THE BAPTIST'S CALL FOR REPENTANCE- See also (Matthew 3:1-12; Mark 1:1-8; John 1:19-28)

Luke 3:1-20

3:1: Same as my Luke 1:5 and Notes: 5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 1:5: HEROD: ruled Judea from 37-4 BC: He was a great builder but was also an extremely cruel leader: Luke is mentioning Herod's time to pinpoint the historical date of the birth of Jesus Christ: The ancient prophecy of Jacob indicated the Messiah would come when a king ruled who was not from the tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:10): Herod was not a Jew, yet he called himself THE KING OF JUDEA, the coming of Christ was surely at hand:

3:2: HIGH PRIESTS: CAIAPHAS: was now the sole high priest, but people also recognized the continuing power of his father-in-law ANNAS, a previous high priest deposed by the Romans!!!

3:3: THE CALL TO REPENTANCE: was traditional for the prophets: John's BPATISM did not grant REMISSION OF SINS once and for all, but prefigured and prepared people for the baptism of Christ which was to come (See also, Romans 6:3-11): John is a figure of the Law in that, like the Law, he denounced sin but could not remit (put away) sin: Both John and the Law point to the One who can remit sin!!!

3:4-6: THE VOICE: John ascribes to himself this role see also (John 1:23)

3:8: WHILE PARENTS AND ANCESTORS: help impart piety and holiness (see, my notes on Luke 1:6), ancestry itself does not make one worthy of God: each person in every single generation must BEAR FRUITS WORTHY OF REPENTANCE: STONES: are symbolizing the Gentiles who would become CHILDREN TO ABRAHAM, through faith in Christ- see also (Romans 4:16-18): 1:6: ZACHARIAS AND ELIZABETH ARE RIGHTEOUS BEFORE GOD: The core of the inner being, and the holiness of John the Baptist came in part through the faith and piety of his parents!!

3:16-17: FIRE: in this context has the meaning pretraining to the gift of the HOLY SPIRIT, which is given to the world at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4): it further declares the judgement of Christ, the FAITHLESS WILL BURN- (See- 2 Thessalonians 1:6-18; and 2 Thessalonians 2:8)

3:19: HIS BROTHER PHILIP'S WIFE: HEROD: had divorced his own wife and married Philip's wife Herodias while Philip was still living!!!

JESUS IS BAPTIZED- See also (Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; John 1:29-34)

Luke 3:21-22

3:21-22: JESUS HIMSELF DOES NOT NEED BAPTISM: BEING BAPTIZED, our Lord accomplished several things: (1): He affirmed John's ministry- (2): he was revealed by the Father and the Holy Spirit to be Christ, God's beloved Son: (3): He identified with His people by descending into the waters with them: (4) He prefigured His own death by giving Baptism its ultimate meaning: (5): He entered the waters, sanctifying the water itself: (6) He fulfilled the many types given in the OT, as when Moses led the people from bondage through the Red Sea (Exodus 14) and when the ark of the covenant was carried into the Jordan so the people could enter the Promised Land (Joshua

3, 4); and (7) He opened heaven to a world separated from God through sin!!!

3:22: THE BPTISM OF CHRIST IS CELEBRATED ON JANUARY 6: the Son is revealed by the descent of the Holy Spirit and also by the voice of the Father in heaven- The words spoken by the Father also apply to us all who are baptized and live through the faith of Christ we are bestowed through adoption (see also Galatians 4:4-7)- The Holy Spirit appearing as a dove is not Incarnation but a visible sign for all the people!!!

JESUS: SON OF DAVID, THE SON OF GOD- See also (Matthew 1:1-17)

Luke 3:23-38

3:23-38: THE GENEALOGY FOLLOWS: Joseph's ancestry, even though Jesus was only supposed to be the Son of Joseph: in fact humanly descended from Mary only: This is explained in two ways (1): Joseph was a righteous man and would have married within his tribe- Mary and Joseph would have largely shared a common lineage; (2): Jesus was born to bring all mankind into adoption by the Father, and He affirms that lineage of adoption is as binding and receives the same inheritance as a lineage of blood (Galatians 4:4-7)

3:38: ADAM: "means" - "MAN"- Christ is declared to be both the "SON OF MAN" AND THE 'SON OF GOD"

MESSAGE ABOUT SALVATION!!!

1 Timothy 2:3-5:

3 You therefore must endure[a] hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. 5 And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.

-The Lord offers salvation that is equal to all, for He created us all to share in His goodness, this is why he became Man just like us!!!
