JOHN 19- STUDY GUIDE
PILATE'S JUDGEMENT- See also (Matthew 27:28-81; Mark 15:16-20; Luke 23:23-25)
JOHN 19:1-16
19:1-6: HAVING FAILED TO REACH A COMPROMISE: that would have released Yeshua (Jesus) without punishment- (John 18:38-40), PILATE has Him SCOURGED- (v .1) and mocked (vv. 2, 3, see my notes Matthew 27:27-31): Scourging was a severe punishment using a whip that had bits of bone or metal imbedded at the tips: Pilate does all this in hopes of moderating the wrath of the chief priests so he does not have to execute a Man he knows to be innocent- (v. 4): Instead of subsiding, the rage of THE CHIEF PRIESTS increases, and they begin demanding Pilate to CRUCIFY HIM- (v. 6):
19:7-12: THE CHIEF PRIESTS: Finally reveal that their true charge against Christ is blasphemy- (v. 7), which was not a crime under Roman law: According to Jewish Law, however, it deserved death- (Lv 24:16): Unenforced the death penalty, he had to be given a serious political accusation...Therefore the Jews changed their charge from blasphemy- (v. 7) to treason- (v. 12), saying Yeshua (Jesus) SPEAKS AGAINST CAESAR:
19:10: PILATE: again looks to Christ to give him a way to avoid having to condemn Him: Once more, this shows Yeshua (Jesus) is the true Lord over the events taking place- (see- John 18:4, 8, 35):
19:11: SINCE PILATE HAD BEEN GIVEN AUTHORITY FROM ABOVE: he shares in the sin of condemning YESHUA (JESUS): however, as he had no previous knowledge of Christ, nor was h
e a Jew with the advantage of the Law and the prophets, Pilate's sin was less: WHILE THE ONE WHO DELIVERED Christ can refer either to Judas- (John 18:3) Or to Caiaphas- (John 18:28), it also refers to all mankind, for all of us sin against Christ, and so all of us have participated in delivering Him to the Cross:
19:14: WHILE THE SYNOPTIC GOSPELS: date the Crucifixion on the first day of PASSOVER, John dates it on the PREPARATION DAY, the day before the Passover: So in synoptic tradition, the Last Supper is the Passover meal, while in John's Gospel, Yeshua (Jesus), as the Lamb of God- (John 1:29), dies at the exact time the Passover lambs are being slain in the temple: It is impossible to determine which is historically accurate, bit traditions are theologically accurate- the Mystical Supper is the fulfillment of the Passover meal- (the synoptic tradition), and Christ's death is the fulfillment of the Passover lambs being slain (John's tradition):
CRUCIFIXION- See also (Matthew 27:32-44; Mark 15:21-32; Luke 23:26-43)
JOHN 19:17-24
19:19-22: A TITLE: what was intended as an accusation and mockery became instead a symbol of greatness: Pilate's act is prophetic, showing the Jews had risen against their own KING, and that the CROSS was the means by which Christ established His Kingdom:
19:23: THE TUNIC: is interpreted as representing Christ's body in two ways: That it is WOVEN FROM THE TOP shows Christ came down from heaven; that it is WITHOUT SEAM is a sign of the unity of the Church all true believers in Yeshua (Jesus):
CARE FOR MARY
JOHN 19:25-27
19:25-27: WE SEE HERE SEVERAL IMPORTANT TRUTHS: concerning Christ's MOTHER: (1): in calling Mary- "WOMAN"- (v. 26), Yeshua (Jesus) is using a term of dignity and affection: in contrary to certain modern day usages, this is a sacred title in Scripture, an address conveying deep respect and distinction (John 2:4; John 4:21; John 8:10; John 20:13; and also compare with Genesis 2:23): (2): In saying to John, "BEHOLD YOUR MOTHER!!!" (v. 27), our Lord symbolically established Mary's role as mother of all faithful disciples in every generation: (3): If Mary had other children, Yeshua (Jesus) would not have placed her in the care of John, for her own children would have cared for her would they not??? This could also explain the apostolic teaching of the Virgin Mary and Her ever virgin, and is confirmed by His own action is it not??? (4): Christ also shows us that we must "even to our last breath show every care for our parents"- (JohnChr):
YESHUA' (JESUS') DEATH- See also (Matthew 27:45-50; Mark 15:33-37; Luke 23:44-49)
JOHN 19:28-30
19:28: I THIRST: The Son of God assumed our human need for water in order that we might be delivered from spiritual thirst- (John 4:13-14; John 7:37-38): THE SCRIPTURE- refers to PSALM 21:16:
19:30: FINISHED: is better translated: "ACCOMPLISHED" OR "FULFILLED"- not meaning Christ's life is ended, but showing His Divine Plan for salvation has now been competed: BOWING HIS HEAD, HE GAVE UP HIS SPIRIT: St. John Chrysostom writes: that Christ did not die first, with His head falling as a result of death: Instead, as Lord even His own Death, Yeshua (Jesus) first bowed His Head, and then willingly gave up His Spirit- (see notes at Luke 23:46):
HIS SIDE IS PIERCED
JOHN 19:31-37
19:34: THE BLOOD AND WATER: from Christ's body to show reality of the great sacraments: The water speaks of our baptism, that is participation in Christ's life-giving death- (Romans 3:6-11): In Communion, we receive His life-giving Blood, "drinking from His very side"- (JohnChr): It is literally the forgiveness of sins and the regeneration of mankind that poured out from our Lord's SIDE!!!
THE BURIAL OF YESHUA (JESUS)- See also (Matthew 27:57-60; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56)
JOHN 19:38-42
19:38-39: JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA: was a hidden disciple, one who believed in Yeshua (Jesus) but made no public acknowledgement of faith: NICODEMUS had come to Yeshua (Jesus) by night (John 3:2) and later defended Him before the Pharisees- (John 7:50-52): by burying Him, both show their devotion to our Lord publicly, in stark contrast to the fearful disciples, who scattered: (see my notes- Luke 23:50-53):
"We should all strive to live a life that is worth Yeshuas' (Jesus') sacrifice!!! Stew on that for a moment I do many times and for me it's simple!!! I will continue to teach and preach truth and righteousness, shunning evil and doing good...I will strive to live by the best example I can in Christ this moment forward, and I will push myself even harder in my studies...I will push myself harder in prayer and I will take a look at my fasting routines and make sure they are for God, and not for me!!! I will continue witnessing and testifying to the Greatness of the Lord and what He has done in my life!!! He gave His ultimate sacrifice, now it's my time to do my part making sure sinners turn back to Him!!!
"LETS DEPART IN PEACE IN THE NAME OF THE LORD- MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST!!!
