EXODUS 19 Study Guide & Breakdown

Israel at Mount Sinai

19 In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on the same day, they came to the Wilderness of Sinai. 2 For they had departed from Rephidim, had come to the Wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness. So, Israel camped there before the mountain.

3 And Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: 4 ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I [a]bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. 5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. 6 And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.”

7 So Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and [b]laid before them all these words which the Lord commanded him. 8 Then all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” So, Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord. 9 And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I come to you in the thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you and believe you forever.”

So, Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.

10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow and let them wash their clothes. 11 And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up to the mountain or touch its base. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. 13 Not a hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot with an arrow; whether man or beast, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come near the mountain.”

14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. 15 And he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; do not come near your wives.”

16 Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Now Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and [c]the whole mountain quaked greatly. 19 And when the blast of the trumpet sounded long and became louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by voice. 20 Then the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. And the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

21 And the Lord said to Moses, “Go down and warn the people, lest they break through to gaze at the Lord, and many of them perish. 22 Also let the priests who come near the Lord consecrate themselves, lest the Lord break out against them.”

23 But Moses said to the Lord, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai; for You warned us, saying, ‘Set bounds around the mountain and consecrate it.’”

24 Then the Lord said to him, “Away! Get down and then come up, you and Aaron with you. But do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to the Lord, lest He break out against them.” 25 So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.

NOTES EXODUS 19 – (vv. 4, 6, 8, 14-15, 17, 20, 21, & v. 19)

19:4: The Son of God brought Israel to Himself from Egyptian bondage … This prefigures His Incarnation, by which He brings the Church to Himself as the Great High Priest – (AmbM) …

19:5: (v. 5, see Revelation 1:6) … also highlighted IN LIGHT BROWN …

19:6: The Children of Israel were to be a holy nation and a royal priesthood … These things were fulfilled in the Church – (1Peter 2:4-10) …

19:16: (v. 16 Highlighted in LIGHT BROWN see Revelation 1:10) …

ADDITIONAL NOTES FOR 19:6 (1Peter 2:4-10):

1 Peter 2:4-10

4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture,

“Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.”

7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who [a]are disobedient,

“The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone,”

8 and

“A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense.”

They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.

9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

- Here Peter is likening the growth of the Church to the OT Temple with its attending priesthood and its sacrifice and worship, Christ Himself being the fulfillment of this imagery … So, in Christ we become LIVING STONES, A SPIRITUAL HOUSE, A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD – (v. 5; see also Exodus 19:5, 6), THE PEOPLE OF GOD who have OBTAINED MERCY – (v. 10; see also Ephesians 2:19-22; 1Corinthians 3:16-17; and 2Corinthians 6:16) … This is salvation in all its fullness …

19:8: They said they would obey but did not, “for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified” – (Romans 2:13; and JohnChr) …

ROMANS 2:13

(For not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified;

19:14-15: The washing of clothes and refraining from wives speaks of spiritual seed conceived through the love and fear of God in the spiritual womb, travailing and bringing forth the spirit of salvation – (JohnDm) …

19:17, 20, & 21: Moses brought out the people to meet with God, that is, with God the Son … He is the Lord who came down on Mt. Sinai, and He is God, for it was He who spoke to Moses on the mountain – (HilryP) …

19:19: The Jews acknowledged that God spoke to Moses, but said concerning Jesus they did not know where He was from (John 9:29) … Yet it was He who spoke to Moses on Mt. Sinai …

JOHN 9:29

We know that God spoke to Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where He is from.”

PSALM 78 (79) Study Guide & Breakdown

PSALM 78 (79) Is a prophecy concerning the suffering and martyrdom – (vv. 1-4) that would face the Church in this present age – (TO THE END, v. 5; FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION, v. 13) … It also shows the Church’s response to all this – (vv. 5-12), because the Church knows herself to be the people of God and the sheep of His pasture, and has her eyes on the world to come – (FOREVER and “from generation to generation”, v. 13) …

CLOSING …

UNITY WE ARE ALL UNITED AS ONE IN CHRIST …

EPHESIANS 2:19-22

Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom

you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

- The Church and all true followers of Yeshua (Jesus Christ), and all of humanity are unified and renewed through the union with the Incarnate Son of God, (see also vv. 11-18 – in Ephesians 2), is built on a foundation of JESUS CHRIST and THE APOSTLES AND PROPHETS – (see also v. 20 in Ephesians 2) … And from this foundation come the Scriptures and all the doctrine … Also, in (Ephesians 4:11, these gifts are implied to be a continuing reality in the Church and all true followers of Christ our God: The spiritual building is one: The Church and all followers of Christ is designed to be united …

WE MUST ALL BE UNITED AS ONE IN CHRIST, FLIP YOUR INVERTED CROSS TODAY OPEN YOUR EYES, AND MINDS TO THE TRUTH, AND THE TRUTH IS CHRIST …
